I woke up to my cell phone ringing next to me. I rolled over to grab it, all the while trying not to wake Joe Don. I was hoping that it wasn’t time for me to go to work right now.
“Hello?” I answered in a sleepy voice.
“Alexa! Where are you?” Andy yelled into the phone, “You’re supposed to be at the gym right now!”
“What time is it?” I asked still confused.
“It 8:45! You’re late!”
“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“What time is that gonna be?”
“Ummm…9:30? I don’t know.”
“Alright, well hurry.”
”Okay, bye.”
I hung up the phone and quickly got out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. I was freaking out. I was 20 minutes away from work and I only had 45 minutes to get ready and get there. I could tell Andy was mad and I wasn’t planning on telling him why I was late. I hopped in the shower, put my shorts and tank top on, and threw my hair back into a ponytail. I made sure I had all of my stuff together and went back over to the bed to wake up Joe Don so he didn’t think I ran off.
“Honey…wake up” I said shaking him gently.
“Mmmmm…why?” he complained.
“I gotta go…I’m late for work.”
“What time is it?”
“8:45…I gotta go. I need to stop at home real quick.”
“Alright…so call me when you get off. I’m going back to sleep.”
“Alright. I love you. Bye.” I said walking downstairs.
“Love you too!” I heard Joe Don yell as I walked out the door.
*~*~*~*~*
I actually got to work before 9:30. That was after stopping at home to change and getting coffee at Starbucks. There’s one thing that I love about having a Mustang; people get out my way because they just assume I drive fast. And believe me; I took full advantage of that during my morning rush. Other than that, my morning went pretty smooth. I got a call from Alyssa saying that her surgery was going to be on Wednesday. The ironic thing was that the surgeon who operated on my Achilles Tendon is doing her surgery, so I figured she was in good hands. After all, I turned out fine.
After I got off work at 1pm I decided to call Kati, since we decided that today, Monday, we would hang out since our normal day, Sunday, was filled with plane rides. I dialed her number but I got her voicemail so I just left a message hoping she would get it before this evening.
“Hey Kati, it me. Just calling to see what you wanted to do today. And I need to talk to you about something. So call me back when you get this. Either house or cell. Luv ya! Bye!”
I hung up and headed towards home. I noticed something on my doorstep when I pulled into my driveway. I opened the garage door and park my car inside. I immediately walked over to my front door and saw that there was a bouquet of red and white roses and a little card leaning up against the door. I picked them up and walked inside. All I could think of was ‘Who knows what my favorite flowers are besides Jeff?’ I just kept wondering why my ex-fiancé would send me flowers until I got to the kitchen, put the flowers in a vase and read the note.
“Thanks for a great welcome home. I love you with all my heart. Joe Don.” I read aloud.
“How does he know that read and white roses are my favorite?” I asked my self aloud. I decided that I should call him and find out. I punch in his speed-dial and waited for him to answer.
“I’m guessing you got the flowers?” Joe Don answered.
“Yes. Thank you. I love them.” I laughed.
“I knew you would.”
“How did you know that they’re my favorite?” I asked.
“I have connections.” He laughed.
“Did Kati tell you?”
“Yes…how did you know?”
”Because she’s one of two, well, three people who know what my favorite flowers are.”
“Who’s the third?”
”Doesn’t matter…”
“Yes it does. Who?”
“My ex-boyfriend Jeff.” I said angrily. I lied. I didn’t think Joe Don needed to know that we had been engaged or anything else from that relationship.
“Oh…is that who you thought they were from at first?”
“Yeah. Until I read the note.” I replied, “Which was very sweet.”
“Short and sweet huh?” he laughed.
“Yep. Well I gotta go. I’m waiting for Kati to call me back.”
“Shopping?”
“Maybe. Probably like a late lunch. I need to catch up with her.”
“Alright. I’ll talk to you later. I love you baby.”
“Love you too.”
I hung up the phone. And decided to make myself a light snack and watch a movie while I waited for Kati to call me back.

1 Week Later
Joe Don’s POV
I was golfing with friend Preston. I was just trying to relax before I had to go out and do shows for the weekend. As we were driving along the cart path Preston could tell something was bothering me.
“Hey man, why you so tense?” Preston asked me.
“Nothing just still trying to adjust to touring again.” I said. But that wasn’t the real reason.
“No, that’s not it. It has something to do with Alexa, doesn’t it.” He said. I should’ve known that he could see right through me.
“Yeah. She just seems kinda distant. Like every time I wanna go out to lunch or to a movie she says she already has plans.”
“You really think that she has plans or is she avoiding you for another reason?”
“I don’t know. I’d like to think that she’s just hanging out with her friends, but I just don’t know.”
”What about that stunt you tried to pull that first night you guys were home.”
“She seemed okay. Like she didn’t get mad at me or anything. But right after that was when she started to avoid me. So maybe it does have something to do with her not wanting be around me.”
“Yeah maybe. Well try to just brush it off. You gotta just get chill about everything before you leave and try to figure out what’s wrong with you guys.”
”Yeah. Probably. I’ll see if I can get anything out of her tonight when I stop over there.”
”You’re just gonna drop by her house unannounced?”
”No, I’m gonna call first but I’m gonna stop by there this afternoon since I’m already in town.”
*~*~*~*~*
My POV
“You gotta stop avoiding him.” My friend Tristin said while were taking a break from work.
“I know but, it surprised me that he was trying to be so forceful.” I said concerned.
“Yeah. But if you keep avoiding him, he might just walk away.”
“Don’t say that! You’re scaring me.”
“But it’s true. You remember what Gary said don’t you.”
“Yeah...but I also remember what Joe Don said to me about that whole thing.”
“Well, try and see if you guys can like go out tonight before he leaves. Because from what I hear, he wants to see you.”
“Who did you hear that from?”
”Kati. He keeps in touch with her a lot. She’s like his secret spy.
“Alright. Well if he wants to see me I’ll keep tonight open for him.”
“Good. The last thing you want is him leaving for the weekend on a bad note.”
“Alright, thanks hun. We better get back to work.” I laughed as we walked back out into the gym.
*~*~*~*~*
When I got home from work I went over to check my messages on my phone. I had only one. It was from Joe Don. So I pressed listen and went a grabbed a water from my fridge.
“Hey, I’m in town so I was just wondering if you wanted to go out tonight or maybe just stay in. We need to talk about some things. Call me either way. I love you. Bye.”
I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to straighten things out but the only way I could, would be to tell him about Jeff. I also didn’t want to tell Joe Don about that because he might think I’m not over everything that happened with Jeff. But I knew was going to have to tell him eventually. So I figured it would just be better to tell him sooner than later. I decided to call him back.
“Hello?” he answered.
“Hey, you wanted to talk to me.” I said.
“Yeah, you at home?”
“Yep, you just wanna stop over?”
”Sure, so you’re not gonna avoid me anymore?”
”What’s that supposed to mean?”
”Nothing.”
”Alright. Any idea when you get here.”
”I’d say like 10 minutes or so.”
”You know the code for the garage door right.”
“Yep. I’ll see you soon.”
”Okay, I love you.”
“Love you too babe. Bye.”
I quickly tried to clean up as much as possible. My mind had just been on other things so I had never gotten to it over the past week. About 5 minutes later I heard the garage door open. I took a deep breath knowing what I had to say. I just hoped Joe Don would understand.
“Hey, I’m in the kitchen.” I said when I heard the door open.
“Hi honey. Long time no see.” Joe Don said coming in and giving me a kiss.
“Yeah. So…”
“So…”
“Okay, why is this so awkward?”
“I don’t know.” He laughed, “But I’m just gonna ask you straight out. Why have you been avoiding me?”
”First of all, I just wanna say it’s not entirely because of what happened the other night. It’s not that at all.”
”Then what is it?” Joe Don asked trying to ease it out of me.
“Well you know when I told you about how my ex-boyfriend was the third person who knew what my favorite flowers were?”
”Yeah, what about it?”
”Well, he’s not my ex-boyfriend. We were engaged for 4 months. And things just didn’t work out.
“How long ago was this whole thing?”
”Late last year early this year.”
“And your not over the whole thing are you?”
”No it’s not that I’m not over it. It’s just that the engagement came out of something that I wasn’t expecting.”
“What was that?” Joe Don asked curiously.
I took a deep breath. I knew I had to tell him.
“I found out last December that I was pregnant. And I ended up miscarrying. We tried to work things out, but his heart just wasn’t in it.”
“So it kinda was related to the other night.”
”Yeah, I guess. I just don’t want to happen again. It crushed me when it ended and I didn’t think I could ever get over it. Until I met you.”
“How come you never told me before this?”
“Because I didn’t want you to think you’re just some rebound guy, because you’re not. You’re far from that. You aren’t mad at me are you?”
”No, I just wish you would’ve told me about it sooner. You know that you don’t have to hide anything from me.”
“I know that, it’s just I didn’t want you to think that I’m not over it. Even Kati doesn’t think I’m over it still.”
”I think that if you weren’t over it you wouldn’t have told me about it.”
“Exactly. I’ve already vented all of that to Kati but she doesn’t seem to think that it’s past me. And she knows how much I love you and I wouldn’t be able to love you as much as I do if I wasn’t over the whole situation.”
“Listen, I understand that what happened to you would make it so hard to move on. And I give you a lot of credit for being able to do so as fast as you have. I know sure that you do love me a lot it’s just hard for you to show it. And I understand that you don’t want to move to fast with our relationship.” Joe Don said lovingly.
“Thank you so much for understanding.” I said giving him a hug. “You have no idea how much better this makes me feel knowing that you know about this whole thing.”
“Your welcome.” He replied giving me a kiss.
“Alright, so no more depressing talk.” I laughed pulling out of his embrace.
“Depressing? I thought you were over it.” He joked.
“Stop it! Did you not just listen to a word I said?” I laughed playfully hitting him.
“I’m kidding! Chill out…” he smiled at me. “What do you say we go out on the town before I have to go to work tomorrow?”
“Alright, but I need to shower first. I smell like chalk and sweat.” I laughed.
“Yeah, you do.”
“Stop that. You’re supposed to say that I don’t smell!” I complained.
“I’m kidding!” he replied giving me another hug.
“Okay, fine. Give me like 30 minutes. Watch TV. Don’t destroy my house.” I laughed heading down the hall to my bathroom.

Joe Don’s POV
I was finally able to relax, knowing that neither me nor Alexa had to hide anything. It was good to know that she trusted me with anything. She finally let her guard done completely and let me know something about her that had affected her so much.
“You know what, I’m starving.” Alexa said laughing as we walked out of the movie theater.
“You just ate like an entire thing of large popcorn! How could you still be hungry?” I laughed in disbelief.
“Popcorn isn’t food!”
“If you spent half your time on a tour bus you’d think it is.”
“Oh quit complaining…you know you love spending time with Jay!”
“Yeah…of course I do.” I laughed.
“Come on…I’m so hungry! I’m not even kidding.” She begged.
“Fine. We’ll get some food. Relax.”
*~*~*~*~*
After dinner we decided that we better call it a night. I had to be up at ready to leave at 8am. Going to be a difficult task. Once we got back to Alexa’s I collapsed onto the couch and Alexa fell on top of me.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Chillin…”she replied laughing.
“Chillin? Interesting…” I added giving her a kiss. Finally when the kiss ended I couldn’t help but smile at her. It was then that I realized I was falling head over heels for her. I don’t think I can even remember the last time I felt like that.
“What are you smiling at?” she asked me.
“You.”
”Really? Why?”
“Because I’m falling in love with you.” I replied watching her eyes well up with tears. I knew at that moment I was about to see Alexa cry for the first time.
“Why do you have to do this to me?” she said trying to hold back her tears, but it didn’t work.
“Because, I really am falling in love with you” I said whipping the tears from her eyes.
