My POV

I pushed check messages and looked at the screen. It was from my brother Justin so I pushed listen.

“Hey sis, Mom wants us to come up to Kenosha this weekend. I don’t know why though. I can get our flight booker for the team to get plane tickets. So anyways call me back when you get this. Bye.”

Great, just what I need…more stuff on my schedule. I already had to be at the gym on what supposed to be my week off to work with the college prospects. But I still went ahead and called Justin back.

The phone got all the way to the answering machine before anyone picked up.

“Hello.” I heard Jessica, my brother’s finance say.
“Hey Jess, it’s Alexa. Can I talk to Justin?”
“Yeah sure, hold on”

I heard her call for him and waited for a minute.

“Hey.” Justin said.
“Why don’t you just call my cell? You know I’m never home!”
“Ummmm…I don’t know but you don’t gotta get all mean about it.”
“I’m not its just you know you are actually gonna have a chance of getting a hold of me if you just call my cell.” I said.
“Whatever, so can you go this weekend or not?”
“I guess, but I really don’t have the time for it…” I replied.
“Good, cuz I really don’t want to have to go by myself. Plus this is my last chance to get away before training camp starts.” Justin said.
“How horrible! You’re gonna have to play football all the time and get paid $5 million for doing it! What a tragedy!” I said sarcastically.
“Shut up! It’s not like you don’t get paid to do gymnastics.” He shot back.
“FYI, I don’t actually do gymnastics, I just get hit in the face everyday by drama queen teenage gymnasts…it isn’t always fun. Plus I’m paid 1% of what you get paid and I work year round.” I informed him.
“Okay you win. So I’ll call Jeff and get us tickets or one of the company jets.”
“Fine. So call me back when you have details.” I said.
“Okay, bye ‘Lex.”
“Bye”

Justin is a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans here in Nashville and he lives like maybe 10 minutes away from me. It’s nice to have at least some family in the same city. Being good in sports runs in out family. Both are parents were athletes and our little sister Samantha (or Sammy as we call her) plays soccer for Arizona State. Luckily for our parents all of us got full rides so they didn’t have to pay for 3 kids to go to college.

“Okay girls, good work today. See you on Wednesday!”

It was 9 pm and I was ready to get home. I locked up the gym and headed out to my car. I immediately put the top down and just let the wind blow through my hair.

I got home at about 9:30 so I figured I would call my mom and see why she wanted me and Justin to come home this weekend. I punched in my parent’s number on my land-line and waited for an answer.

“Hello.” I heard my dad’s voice.
“Hi Dad. Can I talk to Mom? It’s about this weekend.”
“Yeah, sure hunny. Just a minute.”

I waited a minute so I figured she was doing paperwork for the horses. She’s a thoroughbred racing trainer by the way.

“Hi sweetie.” She said into the phone
“Hi, I’m just calling about this weekend”
“Oh yeah, about that…”

Well at least it wasn’t anything bad. My mom wanted us to come home this weekend to see her newest filly in her first race. So it was going to a little nerve racking.

I thought about it for a while and I figured I wasn’t gonna wanna spend 4 days with just my family. So I called up Kati to ask if she wanted to come with.

We talked for a while about the weekend since she decided she was going. Then we just talked about random things for almost for about an hour. It was almost 11 pm so we decided to call it a night.

After that I went and got ready for bed. I knew I had long day tomorrow. Get off work, finalize travel arrangements, the list went on and on. Well at least I knew I could take my cat with me instead of trying to find someone last minute to take care of her while I was gone. I didn’t want to think about what all I had to do tomorrow so I just crawled into bed and went to sleep.

I woke up with the sun shinning through my windows. No alarm needed and that was the first time in a long time. I looked at the clock, 10:30 am. I rolled out of bed and went to the bathroom to take a shower. I got out and put on my bathrobe and wrapped a towel around my hair. Just as I got out my phone started to ring. I ran into the kitchen and answer without even looking at the caller I.D.

“Hello.” I said.
“Hi. Alexa?” a man’s voice said. It sounded vaguely familiar.
“Yes. Who is this?” I replied.
“Oh sorry. It’s Joe Don.”
“Oh hi! How are you?”
”I’m good. I was just wondering if you were doing anything tonight, cause if you aren’t would you maybe wanna go see a movie?”
“How did you manage to pick my only night off? But yes, I’d love to go see a movie.” I laughed.
“Okay so does 6:30 sound good?”
“Ummm…yeah, I can manage that.”

We talked for a little bit and made arrangements for Joe Don to meet me at my place and we would walk from there. So I gave him my address and told him I’d call him later.

Great more stuff to worry about, I thought to myself. But I would NEVER turn down Joe Don Rooney!

I went upstairs and finished getting ready for the day. I figured it out, I had 5 phone calls to make. One to each of my bosses to get off work, one to Justin to get the final travel plans, then one to Kati to tell her the plans, and one to my mom to figure out what we are actually going to do this weekend. Then after that I had to get ready for the movies tonight. It was going to be a long day.

So I went ahead and made my first call…Justin. I needed to know what days to take off work. I punched in his speedial number and waited for him to answer.

“Hey sis.” He answered.
“Hey so what are the plans for the weekend? I need to know when to take off work.”
“Oh. Okay. Well we’re taking a company jet. I guess cuz it’s cheaper…and we’re leaving at 9:15 am on Friday and we should be back by 3:30 pm on Monday.
“Okay that sounds good. Oh yeah, Kati is coming with.” I told him
“Great…okay that’s fine” he said enthused.
“Okay, so I’ll call you on Thursday night.”
“Alright. Luv ya. Bye.”
“Luv ya too. Bye!”

I hung up and moved on to my bosses and scheduled my time off work. So now that was taken care of, so I moved on Kati. I told her about the details of the trip. We figured she would just be at my house by 7:30 am on Friday.

Next, I called my mom and talked to her for a while. We arranged for me to exercise some horses in morning workouts on Saturday and Sunday which meant I had to be up at 5 am both days. And we talked about the race. I was really excited especially since the new filly is actually my horse. After a while I looked at the clock. I was almost 5 pm so I quickly said goodbye to my mom and went to go get ready.

It took me a while to pick out what to wear because I knew I would be cold but I didn’t want to look scrubby. But then again, I didn’t want to wear anything uncomfortable. So I settled for a pair of jeans, a green tee, and a white Michigan State Gymnastics track jacket. I added a pair of green and white Puma sneakers to that.

Then I went and straightened my hair out since naturally it’s so wavy it almost qualifies as slightly curly. I did my make up, a little more than usual but not too much. I wasn’t quite sure if we were just hanging out as friends or if it was a date. I guess I would find out later.

Joe Don’s POV

6:35 pm. I was late and I knew I was gonna get rapped on by her for it. I got to her door and knocked…

“You’re late…” Alexa said as I gave her a hug and she ushered me in.
“And you’re not ready” I said back.
“Hey, I’m a girl, I have an excuse…wait, please tell me you are NOT a girl!” she laughed.
“No, I’m not. Do you want proof?”
“Nah, I’m good for now…” she said in somewhat of a sarcastic manner.
“Okay you ready yet?” I asked as she grabbed her purse.
“Yeah, lets go.”

We walked out and headed down towards the cinema.

My POV

We got to the movie theater and debated over what movie to see. We finally agreed on “Knocked Up”. We went up to the counter to get out tickets. I was just grabbing some money out of my wallet when Joe Don said
“Alright…on to the snacks.”
I gave his this look like ‘what was that!?’
“What? If I’m out on a date with a girl, I refuse to let her pay.” He said.
“Fine, whatever…” I said, not really paying to attention to the first thing he said.
We ordered our snacks and once again Joe Don paid. I figured why argue with him…I gonna lose.

We sat down in out seats and waited for the movie to start in silence. I finally broke the peace when I looked at Joe Don and said,
“You know, if you wanted to go on a date with me, you could’ve just asked. I wouldn’t have said no.”

That started a conversation that lasted until the movie started. We sat and watched to movie and laughed at all the same parts. Joe Don even pulled the “I’m just gonna stretch and casually put my arm around you” move which made me laugh. After the movie was over we walked home and started talking.

“So what are you doing this weekend? I’m actually home for once.” Joe Don said.
“Actually I’m going to Chicago to go to the horse races with my family. My mom’s a trainer.” I replied.
“Oh okay…” he sounded a little downhearted.
“But hey, if you really want to, you can come with.” I said in all seriousness.
“Are you kidding?”
“No! I’m serious!”
“Okay, I guess I’ll come” he laughed.

I gave Joe Don all the details about the trip on the walk home. Plus I made him promise to be at my house no later than 7:30 am otherwise I was leaving without him. I also said I would call Thursday night, just in case anything changed.

We got to my house and said our goodbyes. Joe Don gave me a hug and just a little kiss on the cheek (which I loved) and he thanked me for a fun night. He waved from his car and drove off.

I got in my house, leaned against the closest wall and let out a huge sigh. Today was a great, but very long day. I went upstairs, changed, plopped right into bed and feel asleep instantly.
