I couldn’t help but laugh at my mom’s welcome to Alexa. The best part was when they were walking to the house and Alexa gave turned to look at me. Her face seemed to scream ‘Help me!’. She had no idea what she had gotten herself into…it was great.
*~*~*~*~*
My POV
Walking into the Rooney household was rather interesting. The first thing I saw where two little girls chasing each other. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Kelly, Joe Don’s sister. He introduced us back in Nashville where she lives and we just instantly clicked. Plus she only lives about 3 blocks away from me so we had lunch a few times and she has let me in on a few of Joe Don’s little quirks.
*~*~*~*~*
“Hey!” Kelly said to me, “I’ll take introductions from here Mom.”
“Alright Kel, don’t you think that should be my job?” I heard Joe Don argue from the door.
“Nah…I need to talk to Alexa anyways…”
I laughed and whispered to Kelly, “Thank you…5 hours in a car with him…not fun!”
Kelly introduced me to their dad, Wendell, and the two little girls, Michelle and Melissa, who are their nieces. Then I met Joe Don’s brother-in-law, Kyle. He seemed pretty nice. From there it was on to the kitchen to meet the oldest Rooney siblings, Robin and Mike.
“Alright…Mike, I think it’s time for you to leave the kitchen” I laughed and as I pushed him out, “You’re doing more harm than good.”
“You know what…does Joe Don let you boss him around like this?” he asked.
“Not really…I don’t like being mean to him.”
“But you like being mean to me?”
“Hey, I got a lot of dirt on you…thank your brother for that.”
With that I walked into the living room and asked like the true bartender I am,
“What can I get you guys to drink?”
“Great her she goes with her bartending ways…” Joe Don mumbled.
“For that you can make your own drink…” I laughed.
I got everyone’s orders and made their drinks, even Joe Don’s. Then into the kitchen I went to help with dinner…despite Robin’s resistance. I couldn’t help it…I’ve taken care of myself for 6 years…
*~*~*~*~*
The Following Day
“Up early one day, and sleeping til 1pm the next…” I said referring to my sometimes lazy boyfriend as I walked down the hall.
“He’s basically been like that since he was born…it really is a pain.” Jo informed me.
The two of us continued to talk about Joe Don for a while as I started fixing up the lasagna I was treating the family to for dinner. Finally after what seemed like forever, we heard someone crash in to wall on the steps. We just rolled our eyes at him…
“Are you guys talking about me?” Joe Don asked as he walked into the kitchen giving me a good afternoon kiss…rather than a good morning one.
“Yes…but only about how great you are…” I replied.
“Yeah…I doubt that…” Joe Don said grabbing a Cherry Coke from the fridge and went into the living room to watch T.V.
“Lazy…” I whispered.
*~*~*~*~*
“Hey, you wanna go 4-wheeling?” Joe Don asked as the baseball game we were watching ended.
“Ummmm…sure.” I replied, “But it could be rather interesting since I haven’t been on one for like three years.”
“This should be real fun then…”
“You know what…” I said as I untangled myself from his grasp and went to go check on dinner.
“What?”
“I don’t know…but it’s going down!”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, it is…” I said walking outside.
*~*~*~*~*
Joe Don’s POV
“That last turn you pulled was so NOT cool!” Alexa said laughing as she climbed off her ATV.
“I though you said it was going down?” I replied as I walked over and helped her get her helmet off.
“Like I said I haven’t been on one of those things since for three years…”
“Really…impressive for such a long separation.”
“You’re cute…” she said with a little smirk.
“I know…” I replied smartly stealing a kiss from her. She pulled out and walked back towards my parent’s house.
“Where are you going?”
“Do you want dinner or not? Cause I can feed everyone but you…”
“Oh so now you’re gonna play hard to get?”
“Hunny…you’ve already got me.” She smiled as she walked into the house.
That last she said gave me a little more confidence that she felt the same way I did.
*~*~*~*~*
My POV
“Wow, Jay better watch his back…you just might be a better lasagna cook than he is.” Robin said as she ate the dinner.
“Thanks, it’s actually my grandma’s recipe…” I said, “I was the last one she ever taught it to.”
”I’m guessing it’s from your dad’s side.” Joe Don said in between bites.
“Yep, I’ve got pasta and olive oil on one side, and potatoes and Guinness on the other.” I said making everyone laugh.
We continued to eat our dinner and talk for a while. In that time I kept noticing Joe Don look over at me. It was a look I had never seen from him ever. After we had washed the dishes it was still only 7:30pm so me and Joe Don decided to go for a walk.
*~*~*~*~*
We walked around the Rooney’s 10 acre property for a while, hand in hand, just talking. It was really romantic with the clear sky, the stars, and a full moon. But once in a while Joe Don pulled a joke like something about a werewolf. I think just to hear me laugh.
“So what do you honestly think of my family?” Joe Don asked as we reached the top a hill.
“Ummm…a little crazy sometimes, but nothing compare to my family.” I laughed.
“Really they seem pretty normal to me.”
“Yeah, well you haven’t met my entire family yet.”
“When am I gonna meet all of them by the way?”
“Well my mom’s side, maybe at our annual Labor Day family reunion.”
”So I’ll get to meet your entire Irish family all at one time. How am I going to be able to remember everyone’s names?”
“Awww, hunny…don’t worry, I don’t even know everyone!” I said as I pulled him into a hug. I pulled out and grabbed his hands and just looked into his beautiful green eyes and smiled.
“Kiss me…” Joe Don said in almost a whisper and brushed a piece of hair from my face. I couldn’t resist and lean in and kissed him. It was magical. I suddenly had butterflies in my stomach and had no idea why. It was a feeling I had never had before. Almost indescribable. After a bit Joe Don pulled out and kissed my neck.
“You’re amazing…” he whispered into my ear and I couldn’t help but giggle because it tickled. It kinda seemed like he wanted to say something else because he paused a little before saying it. But he was totally swooning me and I loved it.
“What?” Joe Don laughed as I gave him a look as if to say ‘You’re so sweet.”
“Nothing…you’re just way too sweet.”
“I know…” he said giving me another kiss.
With that we state heading back down toward the house.
*~*~*~*~*
Joe Don’s POV
“Why are you so quiet?” Alexa asked as we walked the half mile path back to the house.
“I don’t know, tired I guess.” I tried to pull it off.
“It’s 9:30pm, how are you tired? You’ve only been up for like 8 hours…”
I just kept quiet. All I could think about was the things I wanted to say to her. I wanted her to know how much I care for her and how strong my feelings for her were. The thing was, I didn’t quite know how to put it into words.
*~*~*~*~*
As we got closer to the house I felt Alexa pull me toward the hammock.
“So what’s up? What aren’t you telling me?” she asked as we laid down.
“Nothing.”
“Come on…I know you’re hiding something.”
“I’m not hiding anything.” I said trying to defend myself.
“Then what are you saying?” she said as she sat back up and looked me straight in the eye. I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to tell her.
“I love you Alexa.”
When I said that she got this puppy dog look in her eyes.
“I love you too.” Was all she could say as she bent down and kissed me.
“You meant to say that up there.” She said as she motioned towards the hill and laid her head on my chest.
“Yeah…I guess I just got nervous.” I laughed and kissed her head. Surprisingly I didn’t get a response from her. So I looked down only to see she was already fast asleep.
*~*~*~*~*
Kelly’s POV
I was looking all over the house for Alexa. I needed to talk to her before her and Joe Don left for Tulsa later today. I walked into the kitchen and saw my mom.
“Hey, have you seen Alexa?” I asked, “ I’ve been looking all over for her.”
“No, maybe she’s outside.”
I walked over to the sliding door and looked out side. Sure enough, she was there. Sound asleep in to hammock. With Joe Don.
“Mom…come over here. You gotta see this.”
She walked over and looked outside.
“Awww…that’s so cute.”
Just then Sadie, our golden retriever, started scratching the door. I opened it for her and let her out...hoping she wouldn’t disturb the two lovebirds. But sure enough she went straight to the hammock and tried to jump up onto it. The hammock tipped over spilling Joe Don and Alexa to the ground. I honestly couldn’t help but laugh.
*~*~*~*~*
My POV
“Sadieeeee!” I complained as he licked my face.
“Ewwww…I’m not kissing you now?” Joe Don laughed as he pulled Sadie off.
“Thank you.” I said as Joe Don help me up to my feet.
“You alright?”
“Yep. But I gotta shower. I’m covered in Sadie spit.”
As I walked inside Kelly stopped me.
“What happened last night?” She whispered.
“I’ll tell you later…”
“Oh no…you didn’t get all ‘I Melt’ video did you?”
“No! I’m fully clothed aren’t I?”
“Okay good…you had me worried.”
I rolled my eyes as I walked down the hall to the bathroom.
*~*~*~*~*
“You sure you to everything?” Joe Don asked as he grabbed my suitcases and went to put the bags in the car.
“Yep. Thanks hunny.”
”Hey, so I’ll talk to you tonight.” Kelly said as she gave me a hug.
“Yeah…I’m so nervous.”
”Awww…girl have you heard your voice?”
“Ummmm…yeah.” I said confused.
“Good luck tonight Miss Alexa!” Jo said as she ran from the kitchen to say goodbye.
“Thank you.” I laughed.
“She’ll do fine…” Joe Don said as he walked back inside and smiled at me, “I’ve got faith in her.”
I rolled my eyes as he said goodbye to everyone even though we would see them all tonight at the show. We walked out to the car, got in and drove off towards the interstate. Just then the guys new single ‘Take Me There” came on the radio.
“Now that’s not even funny…” I laughed. Joe Don just smiled and placed his hand on mine and kept driving down the road.
